Persimmon FUYU (柿子) 1lyr Naylor, 2019. gouache on paper. 8" x 11".
As a kitchen manager for my cooperative house, I sourced seasonal produce from local farms—I liked knowing where my food came from and who grew it. I loved finding fruits that reminded me of my Chinese-American upbringing, but grown no farther than 200 miles from the Bay, like these persimmons from Naylor's Organic Family in the San Joaquin Valley. I painted them as they looked when they were delivered at dawn, melancholic in their perfect separateness. They filled the crate but seemed lonely to me, still blue with frost, cold and sweet.
