dream, 2017. Oil on canvas. 24 " x 36".
I am interested in the separation between the self and the body. This is a painting of myself, sleeping and maybe dreaming, but a closer read reveals several eyes on my back. The juxtaposition of this element of horror on my own body is part of a larger discourse around transgender body horror and dark art. As a trans person, I'm constantly trying to parse the way I inhabit my body and to express the horror and discomfort I feel inside this body. This piece seeks to bring that internalised body horror outwards, hinting at a deeper self-horror that has not yet surfaced.
